A Scientific Rational's view of climate change

Climate change is happening. According to a study done by scientists at University of Hannover in Germany, the Earth has increased by 0.6 degrees Celsius in the last 100 years. Currently we are in a period of warming with temperature increasing at double the rate it has increased at before. With this change in temperature, satellites report a 10% decrease in snow cover since the late 1960s.

Those who believe climate change will not affect the ecology of Earth is also gravely mistaken. A well-known example is the polar bear. Polar bears rely on ice to hunt for food, and because sea ice is melting faster in the spring and summer due to increase in Earth’s temperature, polar bears are starving. With more water and less ice, floods are happening in greater quantity and severely endangering the habitats of water-bound fowls. Because of this, geese and ducks are changing migration patterns to accommodate for the more extreme weathers.

Those who believe that humans are not to blame for climate change, or that the climate change is not happening, are also gravely mistaken. The general consensus in the scientific community is that carbon emissions and greenhouse gases are to blame for increasing temperature. While some argue that the Earth has always gone through periods of warming and cooling, the wild animals are showing curious and unprecedented behavior in response to the current period of climate change. Marmots are waking up from hibernation about three weeks earlier than 30 years ago, and polar bears are skinnier and less healthy than 20 years ago. A fruit fly gene, usually associated with hot and dry regions, have been reportedly found in the cooler northern regions. All evidence point to the fact that the current period of warming is unnatural and different from Earth’s regular cycle of warming and cooling.
